Communication is everything … my job is to explain

Speak clearly with confidence… and people will listen.

Communication is everything … my job is to explain...

About me

I started as a newspaper reporter at the age of 19… and my natural curiosity has taken me from smoky newsrooms, to hillside location filming.

Working as a Freelance TV Director involves taking often complex information, and presenting it in an easy to understand way, and keeping it interesting enough to hold the attention.

It's all based on the passion to explain... that's journalism.

Ethics, honesty and integrity are at the heart of it all.

“Proper words in proper places make the true definition of style.”

What I can do for you

I've spent more than 30 years in the communication business - as a newspaper, radio and TV journalist, and factual TV programme maker.

I have the insider knowledge... on how to tell your story.  How to get your message across.

And I bring the highest standards of writing and filming to your project through :

media advice   :   public relations   :   short films   :   media training:

photography   :   press releases  :   social media   :   web design

Words

Press releases. Briefing papers. Ghost writing. Promotional pitches.

Tabloid journalism taught me that words are precious.  Writing should be simple and to the point.

Cut out jargon and present information in ways that are easy to understand  and engaging.  And always maintaining the highest standards of accuracy.

With my help, get to know your audience, speak their language, and they will hear you.

Pictures

High end broadcast television demands the very best - and I have made some of the UK's most watched BBC TV programmes.  It takes creative vision,  attention to detail, and knowledge to make film sequences that really leap out of the screen.

Using tried and trusted techniques, I can bring  sparkle to your public profile, and your social media. Together we can create lively and engaging imagery for your product or service.

And I can teach  you easy shortcuts to creating your own vibrant short films.

Web (and content)

A five year old can design a webpage...  and many small companies pay for web sites deigned by robots.  But the key is content that's relevant to the audience.

What's going to interest them?  How can you deliver the information they want?

I can help find the style that works for you, write the words and more.

Training

As a grown up member of the TV and journalism worlds, it comes as second nature to pass on skills to others.  I've mentored young film makers on the University of the West of England Masters course in Documentary Production; at the BBC I take inexperienced directors and camera operators under my wing on location; working for Spun Gold in 2017  I coached less-experienced onscreen talent.

I can help you navigate the world of TV interviews, press requests, and crisis management. How do journalists think? What do they really want to know? And how can you come out unscathed.
